Plot Summary

Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film and a spin-off to Shazam! (2019). The movie is based on the DC character of the same name and is the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The plot centers around Teth-Adam, an ancient superhuman who is released from his magic imprisonment by a group of archaeologists to save the nation of Kahndaq from the local crime syndicate, Intergang.

As the story unfolds, we follow the journey of Adrianna Tomaz, an archaeologist, and resistance fighter who is trying to locate an ancient relic called the Crown of Sabbac. The crown has the power to bestow immense power on its wearer, and Intergang's local leader plans to use it to take control of the nation. When Adrianna obtains the crown, she unknowingly awakens Teth-Adam, whom she believes to be Kahndaq's champion, from his slumber.

However, as Teth-Adam begins to wreak havoc on Intergang, the US government deems him a threat and contacts the Justice Society to apprehend him. Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher arrive in time to stop Adam's killing spree and explain to Adrianna that Adam was not an entombed savior but an imprisoned killer. The story follows the ensuing conflict between the Justice Society, Intergang, and Teth-Adam over the Crown of Sabbac and the future of Kahndaq.

The Making of Black Adam

Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., the film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and is a spin-off to Shazam! (2019).

One of the most interesting aspects of the film's production is the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam / Black Adam. Johnson was attached to Shazam! early in its development and was confirmed to portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014. However, at Johnson's urging, the producers later decided to give the character his own film.

The film's production was initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with additional casting taking place over the next year. Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan appear in supporting roles.

Black Adam had its world premiere in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 21. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $393 million worldwide, widely labeled as a box-office bomb after marketing and distribution costs were factored in.

Despite the mixed reviews, Black Adam stands out as a unique addition to the DC Extended Universe, featuring a compelling plot, strong performances, and stunning visual effects.
